Here is a list of hero tiers for April, 2017. This is prior to the Lucio and Zenyatta re-work. Tiers aren't necessarily definitive, but can give a good idea of how useful a hero may be. Lower hero tiers may have useful applications in certain scenarios, but generally provide less for the team. It is worth noting that certain heroes in certain hands may be much more (or less) powerful.

Tier 1:
Lucio: Lucio's general-purpose healing combined with increased mobility for himself and team. Speed boost helps the team get to a point faster than the other team, which makes Lucio essential for any point control map or dive composition. In addition, Lucio packs a powerful ultimate ability and a great secondary 'boop' attack which helps space control. Works well with:Tracer, Genji, Pharah, Ana, Zarya, Mercy, Reinhardt Works well against: Junkrat, Roadhog, Reinhardt, D.Va, Zarya, Winston Does not work well with:Zenyatta Does not work well against:Ana, Hanzo, Widowmaker, Tracer, Mei, McCree, Soldier: 76
Reinhardt: Reinhardt is a premier tank which gets played in nearly every competitive game. His shield is essential to any payload mission, and he is a great counter to Reinhardt. He has a lot of crowd control between his shield and Earthshatter ultimate ability, and has the ability to pick off heroes with his charge and flame strike special attacks. His hammer is a great way to deal with pesky heroes near the payload. Works well with: Ana, Mercy, Mei, Lucio, Bastion, Soldier: 76. McCree, Zenyatta Works well against: Mei, Lucio, Symmettra, Reinhardt, Torbjorn, McCree, Soldier: 76, Widowmaker, Hanzo Does not work well with:Genji, Tracer Does not work well against:Sombra, Mei, Pharah, Reinhardt, Roadhog, Zarya, Junkrat

Tier 2 Soldier: 76: Highly mobile mid-range hero with constant damage output and the ability to heal himself and teammates. He is effective vs. nearly every hero, but cannot work as effectively as other heroes at comboing abilities and has low durability and slow cooldowns. However, in the right hands, Soldier: 76 is an important addition to any team. Works well with: Zenyatta, Reinhardt, Mercy, Tracer, Pharah Works well against:Pharah, Mercy, Zenyatta, Lucio, Bastion, Torbjorn, Symmetra Does not work well with:McCree, Mei Does not work well against:Widowmaker, Hanzo, Mei, Orisa, Zarya, Genji, Tracer
Ana: Top-tier active healer with great offensive and ultimate-shutdown ability. Her jar provides an extra 50% healing to friendly heroes and mitigates the effects of any enemy healing and renders Zenyatta's ultimate worthless, and her sleep ability shuts down many enemy ults and abilities. In the right hands she is the most effective and deadly healer. Works well with: Lucio, Reinhardt, Roadhog, Zarya, Winston, Orisa, D.Va, Soldier: 76, Mercy, Zenyatta Works well against:Zenyatta, Mercy, Ana, Lucio, Reinhardt, Roadhog, Orisa, Bastion Does not work well with:Pharah, Genji, Tracer Does not work well against: Pharah, Genji, Tracer, Reaper, D.Va, Widowmaker, Hanzo
Tracer: Our beautiful British posterchild of the LGBTQ community is full of spunk and balls. She features high single-target hitscan damage output, top mobility, and is highly sustainable in the right hands when paired with Lucio. Her ultimate is fast-charging and combos very well. Tracer has one of the highest skill caps in the game, but can be useful for picking off enemy healers, dropping Pharah from the sky, picking tanks with ultimates, and annoying the enemy team. There's a reason why Tracer has been a must-have at competitive levels. Works well with: Lucio, Zarya, Winston, Mei, Genji, Soldier: 76, McCree, Reaper, D.Va, Pharah Works well against:Zenyatta, Mercy, Ana, Soldier: 76, Genji, Reinhardt, Lucio, Pharah Does not work well with:Ana, Mercy, Genji Does not work well against:Torbjorn, McCree, Winston
Zarya: The big burly Russian lesbian who is totally straight and not a tranny or a lesbo is a very powerful man. Zarya requires another smart tank to take damage and maximize her potential and proper damage to capitalize on her ultimate, but in the right hands she can output the most damage of any Tank. Does she do anal? When her shield bubbles take damage, her gun earns extra energy which gets output as damage. Once receiving a high charge there is little that can be done to stop her from slaying the enemy team, and she has very few counters. Her ultimate works best with Tracer, Pharah, and Reaper, but does not work well against D.Va's shield, Reinhardt's shield, or Zenyatta or Lucio's ultimates. Works well with:Tracer, Ana, Winston, Pharah, Hanzo, Reaper, Roadhog, D.Va, Genji Works well against:D.Va, Junkrat, Roadhog, Mei, Genji, Soldier: 76, McCree, Reinhardt, Zenyatta, Mercy, Lucio, Ana, Torbjorn, Symmetra Does not work well with:Soldier: 76, McCree, Widowmaker, Sombra Does not work well against: Sombra, Reaper, Symmetra

Tier 3
Genji: Jenny G is the most difficult hero to play. If you're good with Genji, congratulations! You've just raped and owned the entire enemy team. Unfortunately, if you're reading this then you're in {qoou} and you're not good with Jenny. Works well with:Ana's ult, Jew wine Works well against: Squishy little fuckers Does not work well with: Ana, Mercy, anyone who wants to win Does not work well against:Big and strong enemies
Roadhog: The big pig is now even stronger since his hook got 'fixed' even though we all know half his hooks are still complete bullshit, down from 95%. Roadhog has the highest HP in game, self-healing, a hook which can stun enemies and break their ults, and a great crowd-control ultimate (combo with Zarya or Mei walls for easy kills!). His hook can be instrumental in getting quick pickoffs of the enemy team, and is one of the few tanks who can kill Pharah. Works well with:Reinhardt, Zarya, Mei, Soldier: 76, Mercy, Ana Works well against:Reaper, McCree, Genji, Reinhardt, Winston Does not work well with:Zenyatta, Lucio Does not work well against:Orisa, Zarya, Junkrat, Hanzo, Widowmaker, Mei, Tracer
Mercy: Despite her obvious flaws (being Swiss), Mercy is a very strong single-target healer and her damage boost is very powerful when used correctly. Mercy's resurrection ability will make or break games. A smart Mercy with good positioning can work wonders for any team, and is always a reliable choice. Works well with:Ana, Pharah, Lucio, Zenyatta, Roadhog, Reinhardt, Bastion, Soldier: 76, McCree, Hanzo, Winston, Zarya, Orisa Works well against: Enemy teams that let her rez. Does not work well with:Genji, Tracer Does not work well against: Tracer, Genji, Widowmaker, Hanzo, Bastion, Mei
Zenyatta: This dirty Omnic was once a robot whore (like Tiffany) but now is some sort of healer. While easily the worst healer in the game, his discord orb provides amazing offense which makes the difference when killing enemies with one clip or two. His ultimate ability helps shut down many enemy attacks. Works well with:Anyone who does damage Works well against:Genji, Tracer, Winston, Roadhog, Mercy, Ana Does not work well with:Lucio, and anyone who wants healing Does not work well against:Anyone who wants to kill squishy little robots
D.Va: After her recent nerf, D.Va is not as powerful as she was in Competitive Season 3. Her shield is now slightly stronger but her sustainability and damage has been nerfed, making her much less useful. Most teams have adapted to D.Va's ultimate and rendered it significantly less effective than it was. Works well with:Reinhardt, Mercy, Ana, Pharah, Zarya, Winston Works well against:Soldier: 76, McCree, Pharah, Junkrat Does not work well with:Roadhog, Lucio Does not work well against:Zarya, Reaper, Winston, Symmetra
Orisa: Overwatch's newest hero, robot Oprah, hasn't seen much playing time yet. Her secondary ability prevents her from being stunned or knocked back which is crucial against Roadhog, Reinhardt, Mei, and McCree, and she offers great shielding and crowd control, with the potential for high damage output. People are still learning how to play her. Works well with:Damage heroes Works well against:Tanks Does not work well with:Dr. Phil Does not work well against:Pharah, people that kill her
Winston: This angry ape has gone from a bottom-tier tank to a higher tier in the last months. While his damage output is not great, and his tanking isn't the greatest, his shielding and movement is highly sought. Works well with:Tracer, Zarya, Reaper, Ana, Mercy Works well against:Tracer, Genji, Hanzo, Widowmaker Does not work well with:Roadhog, Lucio, Zenyatta Does not work well against:Reaper, Pharah

Tier 4 McCree Great hitscan damage, albeit with a small clip. His stun ability is great for picking off weaker heroes, but he suffers tremendously in mobility and sustainability. Deadly in the right hands, a liability in others. Works well with:Ana, Tracer, Reinhardt Works well against: Tracer,Genji, Pharah, Soldier: 76 Does not work well with:Hanzo, Widowmaker, Sombra, Zarya Does not work well against:Reinhardt, Roadhog, D.Va, Orisa, Winston, Zarya, Roldier: 76, Hanzo, Widowmaker
Mei: It's not secret that some of us in {qoou} self-identify as little Asian girls, and that gives them a lot in common with Mei. Mei's space control and isolation abilities make her a potentially top-tier defender, but she requires a heads-up team and features low damage output. Her ultimate ability can be a wonderful opportunity to shut down enemy pushes. Works well with:Ana, Reinhardt, Symmetra Roadhog, Zarya, Soldier: 76, McCree, Reaper, Tracer, Bastion, Pharah, Zenyatta, Torbjorn, Mercy Works well against: Reinhardt, Genji, Lucio, Soldier: 76, Symmetra, Mercy, Ana, Roadhog, Reaper, McCree, D.Va, Winston Does not work well with:D.Va, Pharah Does not work well against:Zarya, Tracer, Pharah
Pharah: A good Pharah makes a giant difference, but a mediocre Pharah is worthless. At mid-tier competitive Overwatch, Pharah is selected nearly every game, and so it's important to have real counters to her. With a pocket Mercy and a Zarya to combo with, Pharah is nearly unstoppable. Works well with:Mercy, Soldier: 76, McCree, Reaper, Tracer, Roadhog, Lucio, Reinhardt, Junkrat Works well against: Reinhardt, Junkrat, Reaper, Mei, Orisa, Genji Does not work well with:D.Va, Ana Does not work well against:Soldier: 76, Tracer, Winston, McCree
Reaper: Reaper is an essential tank-killer and flanker with high short-range damage output, but no long-range attack. His powerful ult can decimate enemy teams but leaves him extremely vulnerable to shut down. Works well with:Mercy, Soldier: 76, McCree, Tracer, Roadhog, Lucio, Reinhardt, Zenyatta, Pharah Works well against: Reinhardt, Zenyatta, Mercy, Ana, Lucio, Zarya, Orisa, Winston Does not work well with:Genji Does not work well against:Roadhog, Pharah, Symmetra
Symmetra: While definitely "on the spectrum" according to Blizzard, Symmetra is one of the shittiest and most useless offensive heroes. However, for defending payload or point-capture objectives, Symettra is one of the strongest and most essential heroes. Her teleporter is a life-saver, and her shield generator renders all friendly heroes much stronger, and the enemy teams' damage heroes weaker. Works well with:Mei, Reinhardt, Roadhog, Zarya, D.Va, Soldier: 76, McCree, Reaper, Tracer, Lucio, Mercy, Ana Works well against: Almost freakin' everybody Does not work well with:Torbjorn, Junkrat Does not work well against:Pharah, Winston

Tier 5
Bastion: This sentient death machine got a big patch, and then a decent nerf, making him about as effective as he was before. While Bastion's long-range accuracy has significantly decreased, his ammo clip has grown. Great for some situations like attacking King's Row, but not good in most situations. Works well with:Reinhardt, Mercy Works well against:Heroes who want to die Does not work well with:Not a Reinhardt Does not work well against:Genji, Ana, Reinhardt, Symmetra, Soldier: 76, Junkrat, Hanzo, Widowmaker
Hanzo: Jenny's brother can benefit the team with his scatter-shot arrows and revealing arrow, but his major strength is his ultimate ability. Combine it with Zarya's ult for high success rates, but there are way better damage options who can also occupy points and crowd control. Works well with:Zarya Works well against:Roadhog, Bastion, Mercy, Ana, Zenyatta, Junkrat Does not work well with:Teams who need damage Does not work well against:Genji, Reinhardt, Soldier: 76, Widowmaker, Hanzo, Mei, D.Va
Junkrat: Is there anything about Australians that isn't dirty? Junkyard is certainly no exception. He can do high amounts of damage, but is easily one of the worst attacking heroes in the game, and his ultimate ability can both be shot down and leaves him extremely vulnerable. His inability to kill a Pharah or tank down tanks is a liability rather than an asset. Works well with:out him on the team Works well against:your own team Does not work well with:Teams that want to win Does not work well against:Zarya, D.Va, Widowmaker, Hanzo, Mei, Tracer, Genji, Zenyatta, Orisa, Soldier: 76, Pharah, and pretty much everyone

Tier 6
Torbjorn : Torbjorn's patch didn't actually help him. While his turret can sometimes be good, it's not as powerful as it once was. Armor takes longer to acquire, and his ability to do damage without his turret is not great. Turret's A.I. does not always prioritize top targets, and this makes Torbjorn more of a liability than an asset. Works well with:Soldier: 76, Mei Works well against:Tracer, Genji, Does not work well with:Attacking teams Does not work well against:Reinhardt, Zarya, D.Va, Orisa, Winston, Soldier: 76, Hanzo, Widowmaker
Widowmaker: A high-skill Widowmaker who can get tons of pick-offs of the enemy team is great. Sadly, they don't exist, and Widowmaker easily has the shittiest ultimate ability. Works well with:Nobody Works well against:McCree, Hanzo, Zenyatta, Mercy, Ana Does not work well with:Teams Does not work well against:Reinhardt, Zarya, D.Va, Orisa, Winston
Sombra: This dirty Mexican hacker is not very good. Crappy damage output, although hacking is kind of fun. She can be useful against a Reinhardt, or good for comboing her Hack ultimate with Zarya. Otherwise, don't play her in competitive. Works well with:Teams who already have high damage Works well against:Reinhardt Does not work well with:Teams that can't coordinate Does not work well against:Enemies
